Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly series hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. This week’s topic is Qualifications for a Book Boyfriend/Girlfriend.
I always see LTB posts on my dash every week and always enjoy reading everyone’s thoughts on the weekly topics but I’ve yet to be organized enough to participate. This week I’ve finally managed to be able to write my thoughts down on a topic so I’m really excited to be able to join. April’s topics look amazing and I can’t wait to read everyone’s posts!
Do you have any book boyfriends/girlfriends?
Yes! Isn’t one of the best parts of reading books falling in love with a character? It always amazes me when I take a step back to look at a book objectively just how much work some authors put into creating their characters. You can tell how much thought and backstory they’ve poured into them even if it doesn’t always make it onto the page. They often spawn fanfiction even because readers love the characters so much and want to continue their stories in some way or place them in an alternate setting and explore their reactions to it. Some of my favorite book boyfriends are:
- Grey — Cursebreakers series by Brigid Kemmerer
- Rhysand — A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas
- Jesse — Mediator series by Meg Cabot
- Chaol — Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
- Park — Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
- Percy Jackson — Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan
- Captain Thorne — The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
- Khalid — The Wrath & the Dawn duology by Renée Ahdieh
- Gilbert Blythe — Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery
- Mr. Darcy — Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
What makes you fall in love with them?
For all you fellow astro lovers out there, I’m a Gemini sun with a Gemini venus (curse that gem venus!) so I often fall for those who I find interesting who normally have complex minds. If a character is able to make me curious of them and make me enjoy learning things about them, I’m likely to fall. If I find myself eager to see their name on the next page of the book or long for their reappearance, then I know they’ve captured a piece of my heart. And I’m a sucker for the tortured soul/tragic backstory type of characters. I love people with layers!
Is there anything all your favourite book boyfriends/girlfriends have in common?
The overwhelming majority of my book boyfriends have a few things in common and, unsurprisingly, they are things I value in a real life partner too. They’re accepting of their partner with all of their flaws yet still encourage them to be the best they can be. They allow their partner freedom and independence. They are always there for them for support. And I always tend to gravitate towards the softer types rather than the aggressive types both in books and real life.
Do you prefer they come from certain genres?
I definitely am not picky when it comes to genres for book boyfriends! Although I mostly read in the fantasy genre now, my favorite characters bounce around from contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, and even classics. There are so many characters to fall in love with, I don’t want to limit myself to just one genre!
Do you find yourself falling for book boyfriends/girlfriends that parallel what you like in a real-life partner too? Who is your ultimate book boyfriend/girlfriend? Let me know down below. Thanks for reading!

You have a pretty wide array of boyfriends, I think people’s book boyfriends can say a lot about them. I really feel you on Rhysand and Grey.

Yess this was a great post! Percy was my first book boyfriend! Now I love boys who bake like Jack from Tweet Cute and Sam from Emergency Contact. I do not even know why but I love it so much!
